Cannabis and the Outdoors: How to Enjoy Victoria's Trails, Parks, and Coastline Responsibly

Victoria is one of the best cities in Canada to be outside. The Galloping Goose Trail, East Sooke Regional Park, Witty's Lagoon, Mount Work — there's no shortage of places to get lost in nature, whether you're after a casual stroll or a full-day hike. And for a growing number of outdoor enthusiasts, cannabis has become part of the ritual.
Done right, it can deepen the experience — sharpen your awareness of your surroundings, quiet the mental noise of the week, and add a layer of enjoyment to something that's already pretty great. Done carelessly, it can turn a nice afternoon into an anxious one. Here's how to get it right.
Why Outdoor Activities and Cannabis Can Be a Natural Pairing
Cannabis affects everyone differently, but there's a reason so many people reach for it before a hike or a beach walk. Certain strains and formats are well-suited to:
- Heightening sensory awareness — colours, sounds, and textures often feel more vivid and present
- Quieting mental chatter — particularly useful if you're spending the week in front of a screen and want to actually decompress outdoors
- Easing physical tension — lighter, terpene-forward cannabis can take the edge off sore muscles without sedating you
- Making slower activities more engaging — birdwatching, foraging, or just sitting by the water hit differently with the right strain
That said, this isn't a universal experience. High-THC products in particular can cause anxiety, disorientation, or impaired balance — none of which you want when you're navigating a rocky coastal trail. Knowing your tolerance and choosing the right product is everything.
Choosing the Right Product for Outdoor Activities
For Active Hikes and Trails
If you're heading somewhere that requires physical effort and route-finding — think East Sooke Park, Gowlland Tod, or the Galloping Goose beyond Langford — you want something that keeps you alert and functional, not sedated.
What works well:
- Sativa-dominant flower or pre-rolls with lower to moderate THC (10–18%) and limonene/pinene-forward terpene profiles — energizing, clear-headed, and physically light
- Low-dose vapes (1–2 draws) that let you titrate carefully and feel effects quickly before you're deep into the trail
- Microdose edibles (2.5mg) taken 60–90 minutes before you head out — a subtle background effect that enhances without impairing
What to avoid:
- Heavy indica strains or anything marketed specifically for sleep or body relaxation — you'll feel sluggish fast
- High-dose edibles with an uncertain onset time — the last thing you want is 10mg hitting you on a steep descent
- Products you haven't tried before — always test a new product at home first
For Low-Key Outdoor Days
Sitting on the grass at Beacon Hill Park, lounging at Willows Beach, picnicking at Cattle Point — these call for a more relaxed approach.
What works well:
- Hybrid or indica-leaning flower for afternoon and evening sessions
- Standard-dose edibles (5–10mg) if you're settled in for a few hours and not going anywhere that requires coordination
- Pre-rolls for easy sharing and convenience — no gear required
Best Spots Around Victoria for an Outdoor Cannabis Experience
BC law allows cannabis consumption in most outdoor public spaces where tobacco smoking is permitted — with key exceptions (more on that below). Here are some of the spots where Victoria residents tend to head:
Witty's Lagoon Regional Park (Langford/Metchosin border) One of the most scenic parks in the CRD. Tidal lagoon, old-growth forest, and a beach at the end of the trail. The walk to the shore takes about 30–40 minutes at a comfortable pace — solid timing for a low-dose edible taken at the trailhead.
East Sooke Regional Park Rugged, remote-feeling coastal trails with serious elevation. Best suited to experienced hikers and mild, functional cannabis. The Coast Trail to Aylard Farm is one of the most rewarding hikes on the Island.
Beacon Hill Park (Victoria) Right in the city. Peacocks, ocean views, old trees, and open lawns — great for a pre-roll and a slow afternoon walk. Easily accessible from any of our Victoria locations.
Galloping Goose Regional Trail The 55km trail runs all the way from Victoria to Leechtown. Even a short section — the stretch through Langford or out toward Sooke — makes for a beautiful ride or walk.
Thetis Lake Regional Park Popular swimming and hiking spot in the West Shore. Perfect for a summer afternoon.
Know the Rules Before You Go
Cannabis consumption in BC is legal for adults 19+ but comes with location-specific restrictions.
Where you generally CAN consume:
- Private property (your home, backyard, rental if permitted by landlord)
- Most outdoor public spaces where tobacco smoking is allowed
Where you CANNOT consume:
- Within 6 metres of doors, windows, or air intakes of public buildings
- In vehicles (even parked ones)
- In or near schools, playgrounds, and areas where children are present
- In provincial and national parks (Parks Canada prohibits consumption in national parks; BC Parks has its own guidelines)
- On transit and transit properties
Always check the specific park or municipality's rules before consuming. Some CRD regional parks have their own bylaws. When in doubt, step well away from other trail users and respect shared spaces.
Practical Tips for Cannabis Outdoors
- Hydrate more than you think you need to. Cannabis can dry out your mouth and amplify mild dehydration, especially in summer heat. Bring extra water.
- Tell someone where you're going. This is just good trail practice regardless of whether you're consuming cannabis. Let someone know your route and expected return time.
- Don't go alone on a new trail the first time. If you're trying a new strain or product and heading somewhere unfamiliar, bring a friend.
- Pack it in, pack it out. Pre-roll cones, packaging, and vape cartridges don't belong on the trail. Leave no trace.
- Don't drive after consuming. This one is non-negotiable. Plan your transportation before you head out — not after.
